Born in Neptune, NJ, Doris was the daughter of Gertrude Doherty Schack and Monroe Stanton Schack.
Doris graduated from St. Rose High School in Belmar, NJ and went on to study and work with children at The School of Infant Care Technicians. For many years, Doris worked at the College of Staten Island Day Care. Throughout her adult life, she was devoted to helping and serving others. Doris was a Den Mother, a Girl Scout leader, a leader of the Elf Club for children in the Morrison Ave. area, which she created, and volunteered at her children’s schools. Doris was active in her church, Sacred Heart Catholic, where she helped with the C.C.D. program and started a folk group; she was devout and went to daily masses. A welcoming and hospitable person, she opened her home to friends of her children, numerous extended family as well hosting foreign exchange students and a refugee from Poland. Doris and Duane’s house was like Walton’s Mountain in West Brighton, Staten Island. She was a kind and devoted friend who always did everything she could to help those in need. She was well-known in the community, including spending time with her group of friends known as the Dunkin Crowd. Doris was an accomplished cook, an avid reader, and enjoyed traveling. She loved music and was an awesome Scrabble player; no one could ever beat her! Doris was a long-time and devoted New York Mets fan. Born in NJ, Doris had a life-long love of the ocean.
Doris is survived by husband Duane W. Rowland, children, James Rowland and partner Claudia Charles, daughter Elizabeth French and son-in-law Charles French, grandchildren Nicholas Rowland and Jamie Rowland, and great-granddaughter Maddison Rowland, as well as numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
The memorial service will be held at Harmon Funeral Home—571 Forest Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10310. The visitation hours will be 1/30/2022 at 2-4 pm. and 7-9 pm.
