George Blair Jr., 73, beloved father, grandfather, brother, friend, and lifelong Staten Islander peacefully passed away on Oct. 6, 2018. He was born in Staten Island, N.Y., to parents, Ruby Blair and George Blair Sr. on Sept. 30, 1945.
George graduated from McKee Vocational High School where he was an avid track and field runner. In 1967, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve where he served as an apprentice. In 1974, George went on to begin his professional career at Con Edison as a meter reader and continued his lifelong career there for the next 41 years. He received several accolades for his exceptional work ethic and was eventually promoted to Stores Operations. George took great pride in his work and would've continued working if not for taking ill in December of 2015. It was then, that George decided it was time to retire from his second home at Con Edison and went to live with his daughter B'Linda and family.
During his short three years of retirement, George spent a great deal of time with his family and even unexpectedly wowed guests as he danced the night away at his youngest granddaughter's Sweet 16 in July of 2016. In his spare time, George enjoyed fishing at the St. George Ferry pier. Some of his catch included striped bass, blue fish, porgy, flounder and blue crab. He had a witty personality and often shared riddles and brain teasers with his family members and friends. Because he liked to remain informed of the daily news and current events, a big part of his daily routine was buying the newspaper and listening to 1010 WINS-AM radio.
Sadly, on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018, George's story came to an end at the age of 73 years old. He leaves behind his only child, B'Linda, three granddaughters, Elicia, Brianna, and Alexandria, two brothers, Clarence and Steven, and three sisters, Maime, Charlotte, and Jenny as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Although he is no longer with us in the flesh he will always reside in our hearts. May he rest in eternal peace.
Viewing and memorial services will be held at Harmon Funeral Home on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The final farewell and memorial service will be held on Friday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. Flowers and memorial contributions can be forwarded to Harmon Funeral Home.
