
Born Helen Smerechynski in Manhattan, she moved to Great Kills with family when she was 5 years old and remained in the community for the rest of her life.
Primarily a homemaker, Mrs. Mitchell also worked for A&P Supermarket and Dan’s Supreme until retiring in 1978.
She enjoyed bowling and participated in a league on her company team. She also loved to decorate her home, where she was fond of spending most of her time.
Mrs. Mitchell was a longtime parishioner of St. Clare’s R.C. Church, Great Kills.
Her husband of 20 years, David, died in 1956.
Surviving are her daughters, Marilyn DeBiase and Dawn Setaro, her son, Richard; two sisters, Olga Baggs and Ann Jackimowiz; seven grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Clare’s Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood
