Longtime Staten Islander Janet C. Hillman, 85, of Sunnyside, a retired chemist and maritime insurance claims adjuster who will be remembered for her kindness and her compassionate nature, died Dec. 21 in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze.
Born and raised in England, she was educated there.
Ms. Hillman came to the United States in the mid-1950s, moving to Staten Island to take a position as a chemist at the Willowbrook State School. When Willowbrook closed in 1987, she became a claims adjuster for Johnson and Higgins, a maritime insurance firm. She retired in 1990.
In retirement, she indulged her passion for reading, enjoyed her yard and the flowers she grew there, and her dogs. She loved animals and was known to have always had a dog by her side since she was a girl.
Ms. Hillman was very kind, genial, generous and compassionate, said her friend, Dan Gaito. "And she was a loving aunt to her niece, Lucy, and her nephews, Tim and Adam."
The Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, handled arrangements, which included cremation.
