A life-long resident of Great Kills, John's passion for nature and learning touched everyone he met. He applied his advanced degree in Geology towards helping disadvantaged students attain their college goals. He loved helping the community and working to make the world a better place.
A devoted fisherman and kayaker, he enjoyed sharing both sports with his family and innumerable friends. He introduced many to the fun of a great day on the water. When off the water, John loved playing board games; a master of chess, Scrabble, Equate, and others. He was dedicated to the environment and to wildlife; he was a friend to animals of all kinds. His exploits and achievements were frequently chronicled in the local press.
John was a fixture at the Greenmarket at the Staten Island Mall, collecting compost materials for the city, a job he loved as much for the people he would meet, as well as fulfilling his wish to help save the planet.
John is survived by his forever loving wife, Ana Marie Traland. He is the beloved son of Renate and the late Hans Karl. Cherished brother of Barbara, Peter, and Mary. Loving uncle to Zachary, Conrad, Tyler, and Julian.
