A graduate of New Dorp High, John travelled after high school and later became a school bus driver, working for Pioneer Bus Co., both in the Bronx and Staten Island. He retired in 2011, after 33 years of service. He lived in Bulls Head for the past 15 years.
“Johnny” or “Johnno” loved music both to listen to and to sing. He often reminisced about his childhood, and Nat King Cole’s recording “It’s Just a Little Street” instantly evoked memories of growing up on Bay Terrace Avenue. A collective family groan would erupt when John played and sang the song - yet again – at get-togethers. He delighted in family occasions and brought life to every gathering.
A lover of sports all his life, John later became a die-hard and avid golfer until health issues prevented him from playing. He still followed all sports and enjoyed betting with friends and family.
John took an active part in the upbringing of his step-granddaughter, “Sammi,” and stayed involved in her young life as much as he could, proudly dancing with her at her sweet sixteen party.
His beloved parents, Jim and Nan, predeceased him. The joy of John’s life, especially during their later years, was to make them laugh. He had a gift for doing that for everyone he knew. John’s belief in family connections was strong. He felt a close bond with those living, both near and far, and with those no longer with us.
John is survived by his loving siblings, Carole (Kellett) Fresca (Greg Fresca - deceased), Tom Kellett (Karen Miceli), Marilyn Kellett (Bob Brown) and James Kellett (Mary MacMahon); by many loved nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, both in the US and in Australia; and many friends.
John’s humor, laughter and indomitable spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
A private burial and family remembrance have been arranged. Please remember John in your own way – raise a glass in toast, enjoy a fond memory, or make a donation to your favorite charity.
