

John Lawrence Stahlnecker was born on June 30, 1944, to Rita (Fisher) and Lawrence Stahlnecker in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from St. John’s University, earning a B.S. in Business. He worked at Merrill Lynch for a number of years, before finding his true calling which was teaching. John’s first teaching job was at Our Lady Help of Christians elementary school in Brooklyn, where he was beloved by all his students. He later joined Brooklyn College as a math professor in the School of Education. He was also the Director of The Office of Student Advisement as well as a member of the Assessment Committee and Coordinator of Title II reporting to the New York State Department of Education. John retired from Brooklyn College after forty years of exemplary service.
John loved New York City, where he regularly enjoyed the arts, especially opera, ballet, theater, and museums. He was an avid Knicks fan, holding season tickets every year but mistakenly made the decision early on to root for the Jets. He travelled extensively throughout Europe with Venice holding a special place in his heart.
John is survived by his loving cousin Joanne Sullivan and her husband Michael, who took care of him until his death, sister Mary Anne Sanborn (Kevin), nephew Joseph Stahlnecker (Leslie),niece Nancy Stahlnecker, niece Kristen Smith (Brian), nephew Christopher Sanborn (Amie), longtime friend and colleague Sharon Casares, and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother James Stahlnecker, nephew James Stahlnecker Jr., and niece Eileen Stahlnecker.
A visitation will take place at Casey Funeral Home, located at 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314, on September 18, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
The funeral service will be held at Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church, located at 1091 Forest Ave, New York, NY 10310, on September 19, 2025, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
