

Pennsylvania. Born in Staten Island, New York, in 1946, he was the beloved son of June Alma
and James Hafferkamp, and father Bernard Strandberg.
John graduated from Port Richmond High School and later went on to attend Bronx Community
College. In 1966, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life JoAnn
Marchese. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, proudly serving his country as a Fire
Control Technician during a tour in Vietnam. Following his military service, John embarked on a
career as a New York City firefighter, a job he truly loved, dedicating 26 years to protecting his
community. He proudly worked alongside his brothers in service at Engine 18, Engine 160, and
ended his distinguished career with the department as a member of the FDNY photo unit. After
retiring, John returned in the weeks following 9/11 to volunteer at ground zero with his old FDNY
unit.
John was passionate about photography, a hobby he pursued throughout his life. He also loved
spending time outdoors, especially fishing, boating, and hiking. He was an active member of
American Legion Post 34 in Lancaster PA. John was known for his generosity and was always
ready to help someone in need.
John was predeceased by his mother June Alma ,stepfather James, father Bernard, and
brothers Carl and Bernie. He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn, his devoted sons, Louis
(Lauren), John Jr. (Randi), and Steven (Jane), and his cherished grandchildren: Gunnar, Kyle,
Hannah, Corey, and Lexie. He is also survived by his sisters, May Rapcavage (deceased,
Michael) and Lynn Decastro (deceased, Amante), sister-in-laws Patricia Shively (Jay), Vivian
Marchese, and brother-in-law Louis Marchese, and further survived by several beloved nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
Service Information
Services will be held at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forrest Ave. Staten Island. Visitation
hours will be on Tuesday August 12th 7:00pm - 9:00pm, Wednesday August 13th 2:00pm -
4:00pm and 7:00pm - 9:00pm. The funeral service will be on Thursday August 14th at
10:00am. A reception will be held immediately following the funeral service.
