Lawrence Finnerty , 66, a lifelong Staten Islander, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family at Staten Island University Hospital North after a brief illness on October 18, 2022. Born and raised in Shore Acres, Lawrence attended St. Mary’s Grammar School in Rosebank and continued his education at St. Francis High School, Todt Hill.
While he experienced various employments, Lawrence ultimately found his niche as an over-the-road truck driver and thoroughly enjoyed traveling throughout this awesome country. He may have initially caught this traveling bug from his parents, as they would frequently pack up their large family, sometimes accompanied by the most loyal family dog, Trixie, a border collie, and hit the road in tent/trailer for parts unknown.
Most recently you may have spotted Lawrence, pedaling sometimes, on his electric bicycle particularly to Penny Beach at the foot of Hylan Boulevard to admire our historic harbor. Additionally, he was a voracious reader enjoying all types of literary genres. At home, besides watching the old tv shows, he similarly got a kick out of a more recent sitcom known as “Frasier”. Lawrence also had an ear for music and listened to The Highwaymen, his favorite song of theirs’ titled “Sunday Morning Coming Down”. In addition, Lawrence often attended church at St. Sylvester’s and helped out at his local community pantry.
Lawrence was predeceased by his parents Jane Marjorie (Stapleton) and Kenneth Robert Finnerty, his two sisters, Mary Anne Finnerty McKee and Hope Finnerty. He is survived by his beautiful daughters, Isabel and Maryanne Finnerty, their mother, Sherrie Michos, his siblings Janet (Thomas) Noordzy, John Finnerty, Michele (Brett) Miller and Kevin Finnerty. Also surviving are his aunts and uncle; many nieces and nephews, a great-niece and great-nephew and numerous cousins.
A memorial service for Lawrence will be held Sunday, October 30, 2022, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Harmon Funeral Home 571 Forest Ave., Staten Island, NY 10310. In lieu of flowers, his family encourages you to consider making a donation to either the Salvation Army or your local food pantry in Lawrence’s memory.
