Mary R. Vreeland

Mary Rita Vreeland, 91 , of Eltingville, passed away Friday, March 18, 2016, with her family by her side, at the Addeo Hospice House. Grandmother of 14, active in Holy Child Church, Mary Rita was born May 27, 1924, in Jersey City. She graduated from St. Michaels High School, Jersey City, and worked for Colgate-Palmolive before getting married and moving to Staten Island. She also worked for 19 years for JC Penney after raising her children. Her greatest joys were her grandchildren, whom she always referred to as her 'Little Angels.' Mary enjoyed reading, going to Atlantic City, and going to her Senior Center, Mt. Lorretto. She also was active in her church, Holy Child. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas Vreeland Jr., and her parents, James and Catherine (Donovan)Sullivan and sisters, Joan and Lucille, and her brother James; loving mother of Nicholas, Edward, Kathleen, Richard, James, Michael, and 14 grandchildren. She also leaves her loving sisters-in-law, Win Quirino and Ellen Sullivan. The viewing will be held today, Monday, March 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, 30 Nelson Ave. Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, March 22, at 10 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Child, and private cremation will follow.
