Born in Brooklyn, Ms. Herz attended high school in Rockville Centre and graduated magna cum laude from Adelphi College in 1950. She pursued a life-long career as a librarian: in New England, the Southwest, and for many years at the New York Public Library. She held a master's degree in library science from Pratt Institute, and had a special interest in children's literature. She was known and appreciated by generations of young readers at the Stapleton, St. George, and Tottenville branches, where she was their advocate, resource, and encourager.
Ms. Herz was a member of the Brighton Heights Reformed Church, and she supported many diverse causes, including the NAACP, Native American groups, and environmental causes. She was a personal friend of Pete Seeger. In retirement, she loved to travel and to attend the orchestra and opera with friends. She had a great love of the visual arts, and supported local artists and their work. She also had a deep spiritual understanding, one that was ecumenical in scope. As she once remarked mischievously, "I am a very good pirate--a wicked pirate--of spiritual things." Ms. Herz was known for--and died with--a serene and unforgettable smile. She is survived by a sister and two nephews.
Those who wish to remember Norma Herz might do so by contributing to Project Hospitality, Brighton Heights Reformed Church, Staten Island University Hospice, the New York Public Library, or any good work of their choice. A memorial service will be arranged in the suitable future.
