I just ran across Richard's obituary while doing a general family search. Since Casparie is not a common name, I was surprised to see you spell it the same way we do. Rick died in 2018 at 65. Uncle Richard

Uncle Richard was my Uncle and I respected so much how much he loved his four children, my first cousins. I have some very fond memories of my Uncle. Back in 1994, the family came to Arizona to visit and he took the family, and my brother and me to Justin’s Water World, a water park that was on the far Westside of Tucson. I remember he stopped at a convenient store nearby to get some beer and he was delighted that he got carded. Now, as a 40-year old woman myself now, I sure can understand his delight. He was a very handsome man and looked a lot younger than he was. We had a great time that day at Justin’s Water World and I will never forget the amazing time we had on those broken, scrape-inducing water slides. 
My next really fond memory was a few years later in 1998 when my family took a trip to NY to his beloved summer home in the Catskills. He taught my brother and me to fish and he took the entire family on an excursion down the Delaware River in tubes. My dad (the opposite of an outdoorsman), drifted away from the group for land because he had to pee and I’ll never forget Uncle Richard’s reaction when a flock of swans started swimming towards my dad. “Just pee in the water, Alex! Those swans will attack you.” It was easily one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen and the fun we had that day is one of my fondest memories of all time. From that year on, my brother and I visited the cousins every year and Uncle Richard always got us fresh bagels from the Deli down Howton Ave the morning after we arrived. One thing for sure is that Uncle Richard really loved his four children immensely. Uncle Richard, you were loved so much and you will be missed greatly.

I was an early French horn student of Rich's. He made it fun to take on such a difficult, unpredictable instrument. He would say things like, "If you can learn to play this well, people will throw flowers at you!" His passion for music was matched by the self-discipline he applied to practicing, a quality that made a big impression on me. I did my best to come prepared for my lessons, and then, of course, he pushed me even more! His efforts rubbed off on a number of us. I think we had at least seven horns in the Staten Island Elementary Concert Band at one point! I was an active player through college, but eventually gave it up as other things took over in life. During the pandemic, I found my way back to the horn. It took some time, but the memories of my lessons helped me get there. I now play with several ensembles and am enjoying it. Thank you, Rich.

Rest in peace to the music educator that started my musical journey. I fell out of touch with Mr. Casparie over the years, but I wanted to share i’m now an elementary music teacher myself and it is graciously due to his impact on my life and career.  Had it not been for him starting me on the trumpet in 4th grade, I absolutely would have never found my passion in music. I will be forever appreciative that he did not grant my first or second choice of flute or clarinet and gave me the trumpet instead! He said my hands were too small to cover the holes fully🤣 I truly am a trumpet player through and through! 

After having him as my band teacher in 4th and 5th grade at PS36, I went on to study privately with him for many years. He helped me get into LaGuardia HS for performing arts and taught me the french horn. As an elementary music teacher myself now, I remember the impact he had on me and I strive to create an environment for my students filled with love, fun, and excitement. I graduated 5th grade and my favorite subject was band. My love for music was then cemented by my music teachers to come. Rest in peace Mr. Casparie. Thank you for introducing me and starting my passion🤍🎺🎶

This is more of a memory. 

Mr. Caspari and I met at PS30. As a 3rd grader I sat in awe when the 4th and 5th grade bands played and was excited to get the chance to join in the following year.

I never would have imagined being paired with the trombone, as it was not on my list after he demonstrated all the instruments, but it was meant to be mine,  I remember it so clearly. I remember how nice Mr Casparie was with each student that day, figuring out what their instrument would be.  It was one of those moments that  made such a lasting impression I can share it now. 

I played through high school, in school concert, jazz and marching bands, even the “night bands” at Wagner HS and I believe he conducted mine once or twice. If my life depended on it I can still squeak out a B flat scale. I have been able to help my son read music for his piano lessons. 

Mr. Casparie helped bring music into my home, first with me and later my sister. Two large horn instruments the neighbors surely loved!  It’s stayed in my life, as a hidden away super power that I can use when needed. 

Rest easy Mr. Casparie. We will miss you.

Mr Casparie was the first man to have an impact on my love for music, he taught me everything i know. He was the first person to put a saxophone in my lap, the first one to teach me how to read music. I remember being in 4th grade band at PS36 when he taught me and considered me a fast learner and very quickly, demanded i join both the 4th AND 5th grade band all while being in choir as well. i remember my anxieties were so strong, but he knew exactly what to say to bring me comfort and confidence. i will never forget the lessons learned, may he rest in everlasting peace.

Richard Casparie was a distinguished colleague and a dear friend. He was a master educator. This band teacher was so much more. He was dedicated to his students and profoundly influenced their lives. Richard was "A man for all seasons." He embraced the great outdoors;  hunting, fly fishing and ice fishing just to name a few. Yet, Richard was also a consummate French horn player. We always knew when Richard had a classical concert because those melodious notes would resonate through the halls. What was Richard most proud of ?...being a father and a grandfather. A man with a loving generous heart, a master teacher changing his students' lives , a classical musician, a sportsman and a father of four beautiful, talented and intelligent children and six adorable grandchildren. This is a Distinguished Legacy. Richard Casparie, you will always be remembered and you most certainly will be missed.

RIP Rich.   The fish caught get bigger as the story develops.Always got a kick out of that. You’ll be missed but the memory of you will live on.
