

Born in Queens, he grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1956. Twenty years later, he earned an associate's degree from John Jay College, Manhattan.
Mr. Callahan moved to West Brighton in 1964 and settled in Westerleigh six years later.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1960, and was stationed aboard the USS Independence and the USS Intrepid. He attained the rank of petty officer second class.
Mr. Callahan had a 25-year career with the NYPD. He was assigned to the North Shore's 120th Precinct in St. George, the Mid-Island's 122nd Precinct in New Dorp, the 1st Precinct in Manhattan and two Brooklyn precincts. He retired in 1995 as a lieutenant with the Organized Crime Control Bureau Task Force.
Mr. Callahan volunteered at the Westerleigh Little Guys and Gals when his children were young. He was also a member of the Cranberry Lake Community Club in Andover, N.J., and Sandy Lane Estate Condo Association, Ocean City, Md.
In addition to traveling, he enjoyed reading and completing crossword puzzles. He was fond of sports and was a New York Giants and New York Mets fan.
Mr. Callahan attended Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, the former Doris McClaughry; his sons, Robert, Steven and Thomas; his daughters, Lori Halasnik and Tracey Netti; a brother, James; four sisters, Joan DiPaolo, Eileen Schaefer, Nancy George, and Catherine Mackey, and 10 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial will follow in St.
Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
