Born on August 29, 1946, to Robert E. Sheldon, Sr. and Winifred Sheldon, Bob was the eldest of three children. He was predeceased by his brother Ronnie, who is survived by his wife, Karen. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Santangelo, and her husband, Ed, along with their daughters, Meagan and Regina.
A proud graduate of Port Richmond High School, Bob lettered in basketball and, more importantly, met the love of his life there, his future wife, Katherine “Kathy” Sheldon (née Gallo). The two were married in 1968 and shared 56 wonderful years together. Five years later, they purchased their Staten Island home, where they raised their family and created more than five decades of cherished memories.
Bob earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from Wagner College in 1968, followed by a master’s degree and a six-year professional certificate from Richmond College. He dedicated his life to education, beginning his career as a teacher at P.S. 18, where he served from 1968 to 1991, advancing over the years to the role of Assistant Principal. In 1992, he was appointed Principal of P.S. 8, where he remained until his retirement in 2001. His leadership, compassion, and commitment to his students and staff left an enduring mark on the Staten Island school community.
Outside of his professional life, Bob was deeply involved in youth athletics and community service. He coached at West Shore Little League from 1970 to 1989 and served on its Board of Directors for several years. He began coaching before his sons were even born and continued through their own years in the league, including one memorable season when both boys played on the same team. He also coached federation baseball for several years. Additionally, he served as Treasurer for Boy Scout Troop 37, where both of his sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.
Bob had many passions throughout his life. He loved golfing with his many friends and was a proud member of the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, where one of his proudest moments was achieving a hole-in-one. He enjoyed spending time at the beach with his family, traveling the world with Kathy, and exploring historical Civil War and World War II sites, about which he was an avid reader.
Above all, Bob was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy; his sons, Greg and Jeff (Kristina); and his adored grandchildren, Kylie, MaKenzie, Cole, and Lucas. His warmth, humor, and love for family will be remembered by all who knew him.
