

Former Staten Islander Salvatore Isgro, 91, of Toms River, N.J., a retired machinist and devoted family man who will be remembered for his wonderful storytelling, died Sunday in Community Medical Center, Toms River.
The Manhattan native moved to Rossville in 1980 and lived there until 1996, when he relocated to Toms River.
Mr. Isgro served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He took part in the June 1944 landings in Normandy at Omaha Beach and saw combat in the fierce fighting of the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes. He also saw duty in Sicily and North Africa.
A member of Local 100, Transport Workers Union, he was a machinist for the MTA for 25 years. He retired in 1989.
Mr. Isgro was an avid New York Yankees fan. He also enjoyed working with hishands and attending family gatherings.
He was a naturally gifted storyteller, and his spellbinding tales and amusing anecdotes were favorites with his family and friends, family said.
Mr. Isgro was a doting grandfather and was enchanted by his grandchildren, they added.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Tomasina; his son Jack; his daughters, Rose Ann Isgro and Grace Giuffrida; five grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Casey Funeral Home, with a mass at 10:45 a.m. in St. Teresa's R.C. Church, both in Castleton Corners. Arrangements include cremation.
