Born on May 22, 1954, she was the quintessential Staten Islander. Born in New Brighton to Minnie Santore and Anthony Imperato, families descended from Italian immigrants she was raised in the North Shore. A lifelong resident she called several neighborhoods home including Westerleigh, West Brighton and finally Castleton Corners.
She graduated from Port Richmond High School and after a few years working at Pathmark she trained as a Radiologic Technologist (X-ray Tech) which became her career at Staten Island University Hospital for the 37 years. The plan to retire in 2026 was left unfulfilled. She was a passionate and energetic worker, much respected as a trainer of countless student technologists, a valued employee with a humble but dedicated work ethic. Her colleagues deeply respected her and was loved by all for her humor, grace and compassion. She was known for her excellent patient care, especially with children.
Sandy met the love of her life Christopher Dowling, another lifelong Staten Islander, at the Forest Avenue St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 1995 and were married at St. Mary’s Church in Clifton on September 12, 1998. Having no children of their own she was blessed with large families on both sides with 18 nieces and nephews. She is survived by her husband and 3 siblings: Robert (Christine), Luellen (John), and Karen (Mark), 5 in-laws: Thomas (Virginia), Kit (Tony), Peter (Jeanne), Wyatt (Tina) and Nancy (Keith). Sandy is predeceased by her mother, father, stepfather Ray Marzullo, brother David and in-law Chuck.
She was a family-oriented person, always caring for her relatives and friends with unreserved love. Sandy dedicated herself to her husband, her family and volunteered with several organizations throughout the years.
