1964—2014
Sue was born on September 20th, 1964 in Kowloon, Hong Kong. She lived in a 2 bedroom flat with her parents, 3 siblings, 2 cousins, an uncle and grandmother. Since she was the oldest of 6 kids in the flat, she was the mother's helper. She kept everything clean, neat and organized. She carried these skills throughout her life. She always looked beautiful. At the age of 12, the family immigrated to the US. In 1987, she earned her bachelor’s degree at NYU in Accounting and started working for the NYC Department of Finance. It was also this time that she accepted Christ into her heart after her newly converted sister badgered her with the gospel.
In 1994, she was married to Raymond Chan. Allison was born 2 years later followed by Kristen in 1998. In 2009, Sue and Raymond separated. Though it was extremely difficult, it was also a time in which she blossomed. She recommitted herself to God and with the love and support of her daughters and her family, and fellow believers at the Chinese Christian Church of Staten Island, Sue set an example of faith, strength, courage and love for her daughters.
These traits allowed her to persevere when she was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma in 2011. She and her girls moved to Hartsdale, NY to be closer to her siblings. She endured multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and a bone marrow transplant. Though she won her battle against lymphoma, the process took a toll on her body. She lost about 50 pounds and all her organs were weakened. Her sole purpose in life became her daughters. She demonstrated faith, love, hope and forgiveness for us all.
On October 5, 2014, she went to heaven suddenly. Though we are all shocked and overcome with grief, we know she is in a perfect place, with no tears, pain or suffering. She will continue to live in our hearts and memories forever. Sue, we love you.
