Born and raised on Staten Island, Sue graduated from Susan Wagner High School in 1971. She married Michael Hicks in 1974, and together they built a beautiful marriage that spanned 51 years. They raised twin daughters, Allison (Snell) and Jennifer (Tocco).
Sue enjoyed a 25-year career as a business representative with Verizon, where she formed many treasured friendships, before retiring in 2015. Earlier in her career, she worked at Equitable Insurance and as a real estate agent. She also pursued college courses as an adult, showing her daughters by example the value—and joy—of lifelong learning.
Family was at the very heart of Sue’s life. She cherished big gatherings with her five siblings—Betsy, Jackie, Chuck, Sandy, and Bobby—as well as her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Her three grandchildren, Eyiram, Ivy, and Isaac quickly became the center of her world. Sue never missed a chance to dote on them, care for them, and cheer them on. Her legendary towers of Christmas gifts were a true expression of her joy in giving. And every farewell ended the same way, with the words her grandchildren will always remember: ‘And remember—Grandma loves you more than anything!
Sue was known for her boundless generosity. If you so much as mentioned liking something, it might show up on your doorstep the very next day, thanks to Sue and her quick fingers on Amazon. She delighted in traveling, basking in the sun at the beach, floating in her pool, cheering on the New York Mets, playing board games, and hosting family gatherings where she joyfully went all out with food—whether cooking up a storm or ordering enough to feed an army
Sue’s radiant smile lit up every room she entered. She had a gift for planning adventures with her friends—whether it was appearing on game shows, organizing road trips, gathering tickets for talk show audiences, setting sail on cruises, playing endless rounds of RummiKub and Monopoly cards, or discovering new favorite restaurants. She especially loved traveling to visit her daughter and son-in-law in Georgia and Florida, often turning those visits into fun-in-the-sun getaways by bringing along her sisters and friends
Sue’s happy spirit, endless generosity, and deep love for her family and friends will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Michael; her loving daughters, Allison and Jennifer (Steve); and her cherished grandchildren, Eyiram (13), Ivy (10), and Isaac (9). She was predeceased by her son-in-law, Tom.
