I worked with Tom at BT/DB when I was just starting out in Banking. Tom was never intimidating despite his wealth of knowledge and I always felt so comfortable chatting with him on any subject.  He was really a terrific guy and helped make my early days a great experience.  Rob Sandt

Tom, along with his colleagues Stan [Burg] and Carl [Nasib], was an anchor to my career - among my first clients at White & Case, where, as a new associate, I was introduced to corporate trust practice and, amazingly, welcoming me twenty-five years later when I joined Deutsche Bank as in house corporate trust counsel following the acquisition of Bankers Trust Company. 

Finding Tom and the others at DB felt like coming home and I knew I was in the right place. I am forever grateful for Tom’s kindness and for his business expertise.  More than a client, he was a colleague and a friend and a very special person.

I joined DB in early 2002 to handle securitization defaults when the CT staff were at the disaster recovery site in Harborside. Tom and I sat near each other and could hear each other’s phone conversations. I knew how deals worked and how to read docs to understand the role of the trustee post-default on a particular deal, and what I wished the trustee would do in those circumstances from my experience before DB. However, I’d never worked as a trustee. Hearing my half of conversations, in quite a few instances, Tom offered me useful advice on how to proceed, and when he couldn’t tell the specifics, his “you might want to confer with counsel” let me know that I probably wasn’t quite as on top of things as I thought I was. I also had the privilege of learning by watching the ballet between Tom and Stan (and their counsel), and the pleasure of often having lunch with Tom, Stan and Carl, and sometimes Michael D., where they often discussed Bank history or their old man problems, and I enjoyed the kibbitzing.

All of us benefited from his wisdom and were blessed with his friendship and care. I remember the first deal I completed with Tom and he showed me how to set up a tickler file---it was 1992.

I remember Tom and Stan when I fist joined DB and how they were very welcoming and also helped me understand the default business.  They also loved to go to lunch!

As both a new trust officer and then later as a new attorney I learned a lot from Tom, Stan [Burg] and Carl [Nasib].  They did a wonderful job of mentoring the next generation of corporate trust professionals.  I will always remember Tom’s gentle nature and good humor.

Tom was so incredibly kind and patient in his education of us young newbies at Bankers Trust.

I distinctly remember one morning, perhaps in my first year there,  I came into the office and Tom had left on my desk a men’s clothing catalogue. It had suits, jackets, dress pants, sweaters, etc.  But the reason Tom gave it to me was that the catalogue catered to short men!  Tom was no giant and he recognized the challenge sometimes buying suits and pants for work that I would sometimes face.  He came over and in hushed tones, said to me that he used it a lot and their suits would fit me better.  

This would have been in 1996ish I believe, and the memory is clear a day.

I also remember one Saturday I had to come into the office.  We were working on some file clean up project, when I happened to walk into Tom’s office.   I caught him with his sleeves rolled up and his forearms were covered in old handmade navy tattoos, all green and blurry at that point.  I said “Nice ink, Tom!”  He was so embarrassed and quickly rolled his sleeves down.  Once I assured him his secret was safe, he began to tell me about when he was in the Navy.  He had bright red hair back then and showed me a couple of pictures that he brought in a few days later.  He was so proud of the navy but as a professional was shy about hiding his tattoos he got on board as a sailor.

Just now sharing this, I am just so overwhelmed in thinking how lucky we were to have someone like him just starting out.
