The native Staten Islander was born and raised in Stapleton and graduated from Curtis High School.
He lived in Dongan Hills for most of his life, except for a brief period in upstate Cold Spring. For the last 15 years he was a caregiver for his mother, Rose Coughlin, in Dongan Hills, until her death in November.
Mr. Coughlin had a 40-year career with Metro North, working in various capacities, including running trains out of Grand Central Station, ticketing and the payroll department. He retired when he was in his late 50s.
He was a member of the Ocean Yacht Club, Stapleton.
Mr. Coughlin enjoyed walking and was a huge New York Giants and Mets fan.
"He was straightforward and candid and never backed down from anything," said his son, Miles. "He was serious about things, but he also was a lot of fun."
Mr. Coughlin attended St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills.
Surviving, along with his son, Miles, are his wife, the former Irene Franceschini; his son, Ryan; his daughter, Keri Coughlin, and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. Arrangements include cremation.
