William (known as Sonny to his childhood friends) was born in New Brighton and raised in Randal Manor, he attended PS 1 and Curtis High School and lived his entire life on Staten Island.
During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army with two close lifelong friends, Frank J. Baldassarre and Charles A. Chicolo and served with the U.S. 1st Cavalry in Japan. After the war, he returned to school at New York University on the GI Bill followed by the completion of his masters studies.
William became a NYC School Teacher in 1970 following a sales career at the American
Tobacco Company from 1952 to 1965. William's ambition was always to become an educator and he fulfilled that ambition until he retired in 1991.
William enjoyed many happy and fulfilled years married and in retirement together with his wife Anne, married in 1951 until she passed away in 2006. William spent many long winters between frigid Staten Island and sunny Boca Raton Florida. In addition to extensive travel, William and his wife Anne enjoyed watching baseball and football games and taking regular weekend trips with friends to Atlantic City. He also enjoyed going to the dog track with his brother-in-law Mike Valenti in Palm Beach. When routinely asked how he did, William would smile and always respond " I held my own”.
William will be remembered for his love, caring and respect for his family and friends. At the final stage of his long fulfilled life, his only wish was to be surrounded and cared for by family in his family home of 70+ years. As his children, we are comforted knowing that we helped Dad fulfill that wish.
