Hilda is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Richard Howard and Brenda and Daniel Mahaffey, and her son, John L. Hendrick, Jr.; four granddaughters, Ginger Howard Street, Gina Howard Lanier, Gigi Howard and Stephanie Mahaffey Horah; and five great-grandchildren, Blake Kochling, Sam Lanier, Dawson and Natalie Horah, and Richard Southworth Howard. She is also survived by two sisters, Wilma Lord Akins of Statesboro and Annie Ruth Lord Jackson of McDonough, Georgia; many nieces and nephews; and her special caregiver, Rose Marie Glisson. Mrs. Hendrick is predeceased by her parents, A. Bartow Lord and Leila Lord.
Hilda was a self-made business woman working side by side with her recently departed husband of 71 years, John L. Hendrick. In 1945, they opened Hendrick Self-Service, a grocery store at 48 West Main Street. She soon started their sandwich business, handling the early morning production of hundreds of sandwiches each day. During these years, she raised three grateful children, managed the books for one grateful, overworked husband, and cooked countless fish fries at the family cabin on Cyprus Lake. Retiring after 25 years, she and John purchased and ran The Crest restaurant in Crestview, Florida. While managing the restaurant, her enthusiastic involvement in the community led her to become president of the local chapter of Pilot International and enjoy many years of league bowling.
Twelve years later, Hilda and John returned again to their beloved Statesboro. In these later years she loved cultivating flowering plants, blueberries, and African violets that were enjoyed by their friends across Statesboro. She belonged to the Statesboro First United Methodist Church, a membership that spanned more than 65 years, including service in the Lee Lanier Circle. Her earthly family is happy she is at her husband’s side once again.
