

He was born in Dade City, Fla., and grew up in Waycross, Ga. After graduating high school in 1943, Mr. Mathis joined the United States Army and served in combat during the Battle of the Bulge. After receiving his honorable discharge from the Army in 1960, Mac moved to Bulloch County.
Mr. Mathis owned and operated Burton's Shoe Store in Statesboro for many years and then went to work with International Shoe Company, where he worked for 13 years until his retirement.
Mac was a member of Pittman Park United Methodist Church, the XYZ group and the American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Elizabeth Marsh Mathis; and his parents, Raford C. and Ruby Beatrice Mathis.
Survivors are two daughters, Lynda Mathis Yawn, and her husband, Billy, of Statesboro; Cynda Mathis Lee, and her husband, Trey, of Sunset, S.C.; son, David M. Mathis, and his wife, Connie, of Statesboro; brothers, James Mathis, and his wife, Pat, of Waycross; and Donnie Mathis, and his wife, Norma Jean, of Jesup; seven grandchildren, Matt Mathis, Andy Rice, Mike Yawn, Beth Stewart, Abby Lanier, Tadd Lee and Meredi Lee; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Celebration of life services will be held Friday, Oct. 27, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at Pittman Park United Methodist Church.
