

Mr. George Emmett Carey, Jr., 67, of 152 Cedar Lakes Dr. Statesville, died Friday August 10, 2012 at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. Born in Philadelphia, Pa. on March 13, 1945, he was a son of the late George E. Carey, Sr. and Viola DeSoi. He was retired from the United States Marine Corps and after retirement worked for CBS Records as a supervisor. He was a high school football player playing at Delsea Regional and was a coach at Scotts and West Iredell High Schools. He enjoyed electric trains, hunting, fishing, and trapping. While serving in Viet Nam he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star becoming a disabled war veteran. He was also affectionately known as (Coach Carey).
In addition to his parents, George was preceeded in death by his sister Donna Hoffman of Statesville, NC.
On December 18, 1971 he married the former Dyane Schantag who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Doug Carey and his wife, Debbie of Franklinville, N.J. and Michael Carey and his wife , Kelly of Newton, N.C., two daughters, Mary Mohrfield and her husband, Ray of Sewell, N.J. and Evan Flury and her husband, Bill of Statesville. Also surviving is a forever daughter-in-law, Sheryl Neely of Franklinville, N.J.
Also surviving are three brothers, Rick Groce of Yadkinville, N.C., Ed Groce of Statesville and Bob Groce of Salem, N.J., two sisters, Sandra Cockerham of Gillette, Wyoming and June Bonsall of Philadelphia, Pa., along with ten grandchildren: Justin Carey, Amanda Richardson, Kevin Carey, Mark Mohrfield, Matthew Carey, Carlie Drew Stewart, Damon Bryce Stewart, Rylan Carey Stewart, Brock George Carey and Taylor Elizabeth Carey. Also surviving are his two special dogs, Katie Scarlett and Sophie Grace.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:30 until 8:30 P.M. at Bunch-Johnson Funeal Home.
Services celebrating Mr. Carey's life will be conducted at 11:00 Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Hyde officiating. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens with full military rites presented by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail.
Pallbearers will be: Mike Carey, Doug Carey, Brock Carey, Ed Groce, Billy Flury and Damon Stewart.
At other times, the family will be assembled at the residence of the deceased.
