He was born in Iredell County on June 7, 1928, to Henry Fletcher Thompson, Sr. and Mary Norris Thompson, who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Henry Fletcher (Doc) Thompson, Jr., Flake Adams Thompson and Allie Frank Hartness.
Mr. Thompson was a graduate of Statesville Senior High School, a WWII Veteran of the US Navy, serving on the USS Cleveland and the USS Sarsfield. He was a member of Oakland Presbyterian Church, where he served many years as an elder. He retired after many years of employment as an agronomist with FCX, Inc. and Southern States.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel Madison Thompson of the home, two sons, Dennis Ray Thompson and wife, Linda, of High Point and James Timothy Thompson and wife, Mary, of Statesville; a grandson, Matthew Thompson and wife, Melissa of Charlotte. Also surviving are a great-granddaughter, Emma Thompson and a great-grandson, Carter Thompson of Charlotte. Also a step-grandson, Johnny Taylor and wife Crystal of Archdale, step-great granddaughter, Ashley Peek and husband Justin of Trinity, a step-granddaughter, Cindy Pelchat and husband Mike of Thomasville, step-great grandson Joseph Powell of Texas, many nieces and nephews, one sister, Julia Nantz of Statesville and one sister-in-law, Doris Thompson of Kentucky.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Snipes and Rev. Dr. Chris Fitzgerald officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites provided by the Iredell County Veteran’s Burial Honors Detail.
