

He was born April 4, 1930, in Iredell County and was a son of the late John Coit McLelland, Sr. and Audrey Lackey McLelland. He was a member and former deacon at Concord Presbyterian Church and was a lifetime member of the Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge #690 A.F. & A.M. He attended N.C. State University and worked for Superior Dairy and later for J. T. Alexander & Son. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and received 3 bronze stars and attained the rank of Sergeant prior to being honorably discharged. He loved all sports and dearly loved and cherished his family.
On June 30, 1957, he married the former Magdalene Bell who survives. Also surviving are a son, Dr. John C. McLelland, III, and his wife, Karin McLelland, M.D. of Waynesville; and two twin grandchildren, Graham John Coit McLelland and Penelope Ann McLelland.
Services celebrating Mr. McLelland's life will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 8, 2014, in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. Kyle Goodman officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with full military rites presented by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail and with Masonic Rites presented by the Mt. Moriah Lodge #690 A.F. & A.M.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:30 P.M. Wednesday prior to the service.
