

Mrs. Pauline Gibson Thorne, 97, entered the arms of Jesus Christ on Sunday, April 6, 2014 as she slept peacefully at her home in Davie County. She was born in North Cooleemee on January 13, 1917 to the late George Ellis Gibson and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Granger Gibson. She graduated in 1934 from Cooleemee High School as Salutorian of her class. On March 23, 1940 she married Mark Nicholson Thorne who preceded her in death on April 19, 2001. A retiree of Burlington Industries, she was an active member of the County Line VFD Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as treasurer for over 15 years. She was a member of Society Baptist Church, where she taught the Junior Girls Sunday School Class for over 20 years and was active in the Women's Missionary Union. She was also a member of the Johnson-Walters WMU Prayer Group of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She loved children and enjoyed treating her Sunday School girls to parties and her daughters' grade school classmates to snacks at Swisher's Store. A committed Christian, she was the best wife, mother and grandmother anyone could have. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, Paul Gibson, a brother, Raymond Gibson and sisters, Margaret Cartner and Dorothy (Ray) Overcash.
Survivors include daughters, Mary Elizabeth(John) Nantz of Statesville and Miss Shirley Diane Thorne of the home. Also surviving are grandchildren, Melanie (David) Taylor of Statesville and Stephen (Alyssa) Nantz of Sherrills Ford and a great grandaughter, Riley Taylor and "her girls Mary Jo Lewis and Diane Bell ", along with several nieces and nephews.
Services celebrating Mrs. Thorne's life will be conducted at 2:00 Friday at Society Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
