

She was born May 28, 1927 in Rolla (now Verona), VA, a daughter of James A. and Martha Smyth Brown. She was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School. She received a BA degree from Mary Baldwin College and an MA degree from the University of Virginia. Mrs. Hamrick taught in the Staunton Public Schools prior to her marriage.
After a decade and a half raising 4 children, she returned to teaching and retired in 1983 as a sophomore English teacher at Robert E. Lee High School. Raised in Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church. Mrs. Hamrick was a member of Thursday Morning Music Club and of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Surviving are her husband, Richard Minor Hamrick, Jr., whom she married in 1948; two daughters, Martha Peyton Hamrick of Harrisburg, PA and Jane Ledgerwood Hamrick of Austin, TX; two sons, Richard Minor Hamrick III, M.D. of Richmond and his wife, Bonny DeLauney Hamrick, and John Hiner Hamrick of Denver, CO and his wife, Heather Harris; and a grandson, Richard Minor Hamrick IV of Richmond. Also surviving are a niece, Carrington Brown Wise of Memphis, TN and two nephews, David Churchman Brown of Fletcher, NC and James Finley Brown of Lexington, VA.
Mrs. Hamrick was preceded in death by two brothers, James A. Brown, Jr. and David S. Brown, and a niece, Sylvia Moss Brown.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, July 25, 2012, in Thornrose Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Mr. David C. Brown.
The family will receive friends at Reynolds-Hamrick Funeral Home in Staunton from 6:00 to 7:00 PM this evening.
