¿Me estás escuchando?
OBITUARY - RAFAEL G. MURILLO
With deep respect, we announce the passing of Rafael G. Murillo, age 64, on August 23, 2026. A resident of Cicero, Illinois, Rafael will be remembered with gratitude for a life marked by devotion to his family, honest and unceasing labor, and a quiet way of putting others before himself. His wife and children were world enough for him, and he wanted nothing more than to take care of them.
Rafael was born on June 28, 1962 in Mexico, to Josefa Gaytan and Agustin Murillo. From his family roots he carried with him a compassionate heart and the discipline of a working life.
He started working in this country as a dishwasher at an Italian restaurant, where he eventually worked his own name onto the menu. He was feeding people long before he had anyone of his own to feed.
In the years that followed he worked at Enesco, where he brought home Precious Moments figurines for his wife, Estela, who collected them. He then spent twenty years as a roofer, though he was afraid of heights — which is to say that for twenty years he was afraid every single day. And still, it was neither his nerves nor his knees that gave out. It was the company.
Rafael shared his life with his wife, Estela, and together they raised five children: Rafael Jr., Ulises, Jorge, Jordi, and Kayla Murillo. He was also a brother to Elisa, Soledad, Ma. Elena, Ma. De Lourdes, Emilio, and Jose Murillo, and to Ma. De La Luz Murillo and Eliazar Murillo, who preceded him in death. He cooked for his children as reliably as the sun rises, and in his last years working at Dudek & Bock, he packed two lunches every morning — one for himself and one for his brother.
A new restaurant on the drive home would catch his eye, and he would bring something back to share with his children. Sometimes they finished it before he got a bite, and their excitement was worth more to him than whatever it tasted like.
Among his quieter pleasures, Rafael kept up his home and loved the old grupero and Tejano ballads — Los Bukis, La Mafia, Los Temerarios. He always went for the love songs, which surprised no one who loved him.
In these pleasures — the food, the house, the music — one could see what was truest about him: that he never did anything without someone else in mind.
The visitation will be held at Mount Auburn Funeral Home, 4101 South Oak Park Ave, Stickney, IL 60402, on Monday, August 31, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Mass will be celebrated at Mary, Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5301 W 24th St, Cicero, IL 60804, on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Family and friends may gather at Mount Auburn Funeral Home at 8:30 a.m. to travel in procession to the church. Burial will follow at Mount Auburn Memorial Park, 4101 S Oak Park Ave, Stickney, IL 60402.
The words his children will always hear in his voice: "Bambino piccato parli o no parli" — sulky kid, are you talking or not? He said it when he wanted to be sure his words had gotten through. Are you listening? Are you still here with me?
His absence will be felt deeply, but his devotion, his endurance, and his generosity will remain in his wife, his children, and everyone he ever fed.
