Beloved daughter, wife, sister, aunt, sister-in-law and friend, Janet Walker King, passed away on Saturday, March 21. Janet was born in 1955 in Atlanta, GA and grew up in Decatur where she was her parents’ first daughter and the first granddaughter on the maternal side of the family. She attended Toney Elementary and then Columbia High where she also was a majorette. After graduation in 1973, she began a career doing bookkeeping and administrative work. In 1978, she married Mike King, who was the absolute love of her life. They worked together at Mike’s Conyers-based structural steel company, Universal Ornamental Iron, and eventually built their dream home on some beautiful acreage in Stockbridge. Sadly, Mike passed away in 2005, but she was able to step up and manage the business and the homestead on her own.
Janet was always a lover of cats and especially adored her kitty “Muffin”, who lived to the ripe old age of 18 at least partly due to Janet’s unwavering affection and care. She and Mike had never had children, but she was a tremendously devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews in Atlanta, Mississippi and Florida. She made countless trips to their sports events, rain or shine, and was frequently the generous hostess of many shopping sprees with them. Being the life of many family gatherings with her beautiful smile, her lively sense of humor and her sometimes fierce competitive spirit in word games, meant that no celebration was complete without Janet.
She is preceded in death by her parents Bob and Barbara Walker and her husband Mike King. Janet’s departure leaves a giant hole in our family, and she will be missed dearly by her survivors: Siblings Jeff Walker of Tampa, FL (Lynn), Kim Douglas of Brandon, MS (Tom), Linda Waites of Loganville, GA (Chuck), eight nieces & nephews and numerous great nieces & nephews. We wish her Godspeed and joy in her reunion with Mike in the afterlife.
