Anyone hoping to secure the recipe for Nana’s world-famous coconut cake, chicken casserole, or BBQ pork sandwiches is now permanently out of luck. Lena Sue Page, 82, known more affectionately by family as our Nana, transitioned peacefully for her eternal date with glory on July 27, 2023.
Nana was born October 20, 1940 in Union County, Georgia, and was raised on the side of a mountain alongside her 12 brothers and sisters. As you may imagine, with that many siblings, Nana developed a tenacity, toughness, and mountain girl stubbornness that she would exhibit until the day she died. She married her forever sweetheart Pete in 1958, and they went on to raise a beautiful family of sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A lifelong devout Christian, Nana loved Jesus with all her heart, and spent the majority of her life excelling in her role as the pastor’s wife. But perhaps the role she perfected and cherished the most was being a mother and Nana. She was a natural caretaker and loved us all unconditionally, even if we were heathens sometimes. Guaranteed that each of us have our own unique stories of the loving discipline provided to us through her “king hickory” when our behavior was “not very Christ-like.” She was a phenomenal cook, baker, and seamstress and shared her creations as acts of love to countless people throughout the years.
The world was a better, more loving, place because of Miss Sue.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, Rev. James V. “Pete” Page; three sons: Danny and his wife Lisa, Kip and his wife Wanda, and Marty; five grandchildren: Rhys, Shelby, Brett, Ben, and Courtney; six great-grandchildren: Payton, Shawn, Agnes, Walker, Gunnar, and Memphis; best friend and sister: Shirley Kalb and her husband Ray, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Pauline Ellis, whom she adored, her chosen father Clarence Page, and several siblings.
In lieu of flowers, Nana would much prefer a donation to the Good Shepherd Clinic in Morrow, Georgia, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
In the endearing and lasting words of Nana, “I love yuns more than yuns will ever know!”
