

Patricia Burney, a dedicated educator and community leader, passed away on February 11, 2025 at the age of 78. Patricia was born on September 26, 1946, in Richmond, Virginia, to the late Jaqueline and Whitman Thornton Jr.
Patricia graduated from Maggie Walker High School in 1964 and went on to earn her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education from Virginia State University in 1973. She had a long and distinguished career in education, retiring from Bouie Elementary in DeKalb County, Georgia, in 2007.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Patricia was a passionate volunteer and mentor to youth. She served as a dedicated Girl Scout leader for decades, inspiring and guiding countless young people.
Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Hamp Burney, her son, Hamp Burney Jr., and her sister-in-laws, Barbara Jordan and Margaret Johnson.
She is survived by her daughter, Heidi LeSane; granddaughter, Kayla LeSane; great-grandson, Josiah Wiggins; sister, Debra Coleman; brother, Whitman Thornton III (Lucy Thornton); sister-in-law, Alma Turner; special friends Jack Holliday and Patricia Ramsey and a host of loving nephews, nieces, family, and friends who will cherish her memory.
A visitation for Patricia will be held Monday, February 17, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Horis A. Ward - Fairview Chapel, 376 Fairview Rd, Stockbridge, Georgia 30281, followed by a celebration of life at 12:00 PM.
