There are two notable pieces to her life’s story. The first being that two brothers married two sisters. Her husband Bill (Raymond) was the brother of her sister Mary’s husband Max. These two families have remained close over the years with Mary and Max’ children (Dick, MaryEllen and Theresa) being extended members of her own family.
Mrs. Soria and her husband were most well known for her love of children. In October of 2006 the Stockton Record featured Mrs. Soria in an article titled “She’s the apple of the neighborhood’s eye”. In that article Stockton Record reporter Cindy Arora chronicled Mrs. Soria’s 40 plus year tradition of making homemade candied apples for children on Halloween. “Everyone knows about the Candy Apple Lady”. The article was all too right. Mrs. Soria’s children had long since left the nest….but Mrs. Soria, encouraged by her husband Bill continued on in the tradition. Even when her husband fell ill “she spent all day with him (in the hospital) and then spent the entire night making candied apples.” What makes the event so special is that at it’s height Mrs. Soria made nearly 300 apples…..all of which were given away within the first hour of Halloween….and all of which went to Children who she did not know. The smiles of the children proved to be reward enough.
In her memory various members of the family carry on that great tradition so that children in Colorado, California and Texas now get the tasty treat each year.
