Milton I. Travis of Stockton passed away on December 1, 2011 after a brief illness. Milt was born in De Queen, AR, on March 18, 1920, to Lee and Beulah (Traer) Travis, and was raised in Idabel, OK. The eldest boy in a family of seven children, he dropped out of school to help support his family, first “fruit tramping” in California and then with the Civilian Conservation Corps in Colorado. In 1941 he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was in Honolulu on Pearl Harbor Day in 1941. From Hawaii he was sent further west in the Pacific, being stationed in the Philippines, Fiji and Bouganville before being discharged in 1945. He was a fireman for a period of time in Kodiak, AK, and a mechanic in Klamath Falls, OR, before settling in Stockton for his career as a diesel truck mechanic.
Milt was always very proud of his Army service and joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Lockeford and the American Legion in Stockton. He has served on the Honor Guard for both organizations, traveling to various places in the state to help provide funeral honors for veterans. He was also known for being an excellent mechanic and could frequently be found looking under the hood of a neighbor’s car to help figure out how to fix it. His hobbies included fishing, western movies, Louis L’Amour books and photography.
Milt married Nina Pack and they raised three children in Stockton. He is survived by daughters, Nancy Travis and Lorraine Travis-Brown; grandson, Jonathan Travis, all of Stockton; brother, Frank Travis of Klamath Falls, OR and sister, Florence Keffer of Redding. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nina; his son, John, as well as his brothers, Rodger Travis and Lee Roy Travis of Oregon, and sisters, Ruth Stephenson of Oxnard and Blanche Clem of Oregon.
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation on Tuesday, December 6, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM, at Frisbie-Warren and Carroll Funeral Home. Services will be held on Wednesday, December 7, at 10:00 AM at the Evergreen Chapel in Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion or the National Veterans Foundation.
