It is with great sadness and love that we announce the passing of Janice Mary Starling (Nee Graden) on January 14th, 2026. Jan passed away peacefully, with family by her side. Jan has joined her parents Florence (Flo) and Gordon (Buzz) Graden, and brother-in-law Len Webber. Born on January 8th, 1951, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton, Jan lived a full life creating many memories and experiences with lifelong partner and husband Vern (married 53 years), daughter Kristi (Jeff), son Scott, as well as grandchildren Graden, Gordon, Axel, Steele, and Madelyn. Jan also leaves behind sisters Jean Webber, Judy Ballantyne (Bill), extended family members, as well as her Victoria B.C. Soul Sisters, Teresa McFarlane and Joanne Couch.
Jan and Vern loved to travel to destinations including Europe, Mexico, Cuba, Hawaii, as well as various cruises. Once Kristi and Scott joined the family, travel continued with Kristi celebrating her first birthday in Germany, as well as a family trip across Canada to P.E.I., with Jan's mom along for the ride! Family life brought a new level of excitement for Jan, who participated in school activities, community engagement, and volunteer opportunities. When the children were young, Vern and Jan purchased the family cottage, which created lifelong memories and summers at the lake with friends and family. A perfect day at the lake for Jan would be spent with Vern, her children and grandchildren, dinner on the BBQ, a glass of wine (or whiskey!), and a cigarette. As life evolved, retirement was met with a relocation to Victoria B.C., which was thoroughly enjoyed. Vern and Jan loved the coast, but missed the comforts of home, and returned to the children, grandchildren, and summers at the lake.
Jan was known for speaking her mind (sometimes without filter!) and wore her Scottish heritage with pride in her clever wit, fierce loyalty, and ability to find a good bargain! Jan was known for her no-nonsense attitude, and simplistic yet realistic approach to life. Jan loved her family dearly, and we will cherish the memories that have been made. Special thanks to all medical staff who provided dedicated, compassionate care to Jan throughout her journey, Westview Hospice staff were very special, Thank You.
Love Forever, Your Family.
