It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Johanna Deffey, who left us peacefully on March 2, 2026, at the age of 80.
Johanna was born on May 20, 1945, in the Netherlands to Nicolaas and Reyna Vallentgoed. As a teenager, she immigrated to Canada, where she would build the life and family that became her greatest pride and joy. On October 13, 1962, she married the love of her life, William Deffey. Together they shared the majority of their lives side by side, building a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unwavering devotion. William passed away last year after his battle with cancer, and we take comfort in knowing they are reunited once again.
Johanna was a devoted wife and in her later years a homemaker whose greatest calling was caring for her family. For all who knew her, her home was a safe landing place where everyone was welcome. The kettle was always on, and tea and cookies were generously served. Her love was steady, practical, and constant. She gave selflessly, creating a foundation of comfort and belonging for generations.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: daughter Renee Naismith(Archie), and son Hal Deffey. She was a proud grandmother to Alex Deffey (Alex); Tammy van Beek (Martin); and Jo Deffey (Jeff). She was also blessed with her great-grandchild, Sam Deffey, who brought her tremendous joy.
Johanna is also survived by her brothers Cliff Vallentgoed, Frank Vallentgoed, John Vallentgoed, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish her memory.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband William Deffey and her parents, Nicolaas and Reyna Vallentgoed.
In recent years, Johanna faced health struggles with remarkable resilience. Those who knew her best witnessed her toughness, determination, and enduring love for her family. Her strength was quiet but undeniable.
Johanna’s legacy lives on in the family she nurtured and the traditions she created. Her kitchen table, her warm hospitality, and her steadfast love will be remembered always.
She will be deeply missed and forever held in our hearts.
