Judith Marlene Kinney was born on September 24, 1944 in Stratford Ontario to parents, Myrtle Ione Teale and Ernest Kinney. Due to her mother’s health challenges, Judy moved, along with her siblings Marjorie and Robert, to Raymond Alberta. There she was raised by her grandmother, Alice Randall, as well as her Aunt Sally and Uncle Charlie Hippard. In Raymond, Judy found faith in her Savior as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Judy attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, obtaining a degree in Office Management and Business Education. She returned to Alberta, where she met her husband and eternal companion, Bill Buchanan. They married on March 23, 1968. Together they built a home on an acreage near Alberta Beach, where they raised their 6 children. Judy loved being a mother and expressed how pleased she was that her children were such great friends with each other, and all became kind and loving people. The family grew to include 15 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. She felt very blessed to have all her family living nearby.
Judy enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, and being in nature. She also had a love and appreciation for good literature, art, and music. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren develop their talents too. She had a fear of flying but loved hearing about her children’s travels and seeing pictures of their adventures.
Judy will be remembered as someone who was kind, loved God and her fellowman. She lived a virtuous life and strived to follow the example of her Savior. She loved the scriptures and always tried to have the Spirit with her.
On December 5, 2025, Judy passed peacefully, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her brother Bob (Anna), her husband Bill, and children Rob (Rachel), Blaine (Nina), Laurel (Chris) Layton, Evelyn (Gary) Belter, Andrew (Nicole), and James (Karin), and their families.
Her memorial service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 400 Mcleod Avenue, Spruce Grove, Alberta at 9:30 am, on Friday December 19, 2025. It will be followed by light refreshments and her interment in Pioneer Cemetery.
