1942-2024
Robert passed away quickly and peacefully in hospital from metastatic cancer at the age of 81 years old. He was born August 30, 1942 to Mary Murray Gallant and Arthur Gallant in Vancouver BC. He eloped with the love of his life, Dawn Jane, in 1964. He romantically kept fighting cancer so he could observe their 60th wedding anniversary before leaving us.
Over the years his career involved surveying roads, Parks Canada-avalanche control, civil engineering, mining technology, and land reclamation for mining sites. He joked that he started out as a tree hugger and became an Earth raper and finally back to be a tree hugger again before retirement. He loved nature and was happiest outside skiing, hiking, gardening, or driving Canada's back roads with his family. He would agree with Pythagoras' statement "Leave the roads; take the trails." Over the years he volunteered for his church and was heavily involved with amature competitive downhill ski racing. He and his son, Ramon, volunteered as officiants at the downhill competitions of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. He was very proud of this. He loved the mountains and shared the sentiment of naturalist John Muir "Going to the mountains is like going home." He was always willing to give a helping hand, whether it was his children, neighbors, or people in the community.
Robert is survived by his wife (Dawn) Jane, daughter Laura, son Ramon and his wife Virginia, grandson Dylon, and granddaughters Evyn and Kaytelin. In Vancouver, his twin Anne with her husband Bill, and younger sisters, Kathy with husband Mike, Theresa with her partner Heather, and Elizabeth will keep his memory bright.
Please join us Friday June 28, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Parkland Funeral Services (3502 - 44 Ave Stony Plain AB) to commemorate his life.
Robert will be interred at the Wabamun Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society on Robert's behalf (www.supportcancer.ca).
A final thought by Beau Taplin, "Sunsets are proof that endings can often be beautiful too."
