After a long battle with dementia, our dad, Vic, passed away in the early morning on March 20, 2024 at the age of 87. While the disease may have taken many of his memories, it could not take his kindness and spirit. He always enjoyed visiting friends and family. He especially enjoyed his coffee and doughnuts family would bring to him.
Dad was born in St. Paul, Alberta to Sylva Tetreault and Rosalie Fontaine. He was the last surviving sibling of 10 brothers and sisters including Aurore, Emile, Leo, Adrien, Sylva (Silver), Leonie, Regina (Reggie), Flore (Flo), Romeo, Vital (Vi) and seven half-brothers and sisters including Alcide, Albina, Ida, Flora, Aime, Joffre, and an unnamed baby girl.
Dad is also predeceased by his wife, Gloria, and his oldest son, Robert. He is survived by his sons Mark (Tasha Vu), Chris (Kimberly); grandchildren Robert (Carina), Garrett, Hayden (Sydney), and Julia. He also had one great-granddaughter, Madison, and we were sure to let him know of his next great-grandchild on the way from Hayden and Sydney. Dad is also survived by many nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces.
Dad met our mom, Gloria, at a December 1974 New Year’s Eve Party in Edmonton. While most young bachelors may have chosen to bail when they heard about the three young boys in tow, Dad proposed to Mom and they were married on April 3, 1975. Ever the active athlete and outdoorsman, Dad taught us everything we needed to know and do when it came to sports, hunting, and fishing.
Dad loved the cabin at Gregg Lake that he built with his brother, Silver, and many friends. It was a family gathering place for 50 years, and we loved the many rides in the 51 Willys Jeep that Uncle Silver took care of.
Dad also loved fishing at Petite Lake and was also an avid deer and goose hunter. He spent many falls going to Manning with his group of friends for his annual goose shoot and also spent many Novembers hunting deer with his best friend, Ric Maschler, and nephew, Dennis, in the Vermilion area.
Employed for over 30 years by the Workers’ Compensation Board, Dad chose to retire at the age of 55 and spend more time with his wife and family. In addition to hunting and fishing, Dad loved traveling to Phoenix in the winters or driving out to the Island or interior of British Columbia where they spent five years before returning to Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, Allendale Centre East, 10430 61 Avenue NW #306, Edmonton, AB, T6H 2J3.
