

Mary Cooney of Stony Point passed away on Saturday, June 27 at the Summit Park Nursing Home in Pomona at the age of 101. Mary was born on September 25, 1913 in the Ballymahon district of Westmeath, Ireland to Richard and Anne (Donohue) Feeney. She immigrated to the United States in 1929. Mary married Hugh Cooney on March 29, 1937 at St. Monica's Church in New York City and later settled in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. She worked for a dentist for twenty years and then worked for Loehmann's Department Store for another twenty years, retiring in 1985 while living in the Bronx. Mary and her husband, Hugh, moved to Stony Point, NY in 1990 to be closer to her family. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Hugh Cooney, in 1998 after 61 years of a blessed and happy marriage. Her passion in life was her family. She enjoyed helping people and was always generous to others, especially those in need. Her exceptional home baked Irish soda bread was a cherished gift she happily made for family, friends, and acquaintances. Her recipe has been passed down to her grandchildren so every time a bread is made she will be with us.
She is survived by her sons, Patrick and wife, Patricia, of Atlanta, Ga., Hugh Jr. and wife, Alice, of Stony Point, Thomas and wife, Dorothy, of Thiells, Joseph of Stony Point, and John and wife, Patricia, of Ridgefield, CT; dear cousin Ellen Fox of Jackson Heights, NY, fifteen grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home in Stony Point, NY on Tuesday, June 30, from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 1st, 10am, at Immaculate Conception Church, Stony Point, followed by interment at Ascension Cemetery, Airmont, NY.
