From a Florida pioneer family, Ed was born December 5, 1928 in Tampa, Florida to Francis (Frank) and Lois Geary. He had an older sister, Frances and a younger brother Donald. He attended Hillsborough High School.
A WWII veteran, Ed entered the United States Army at 17 and served from 1946-1948. He was a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne serving in occupied Japan.
After military service he studied chemistry at Florida State University. Upon graduation Ed worked for the Florida Department of Agriculture as an Analytical Chemist and as the Director of Radiological Training.
A lifelong Seminole, Ed met the love of his life Juanita at Florida State where she was studying Elementary Education. They were married in 1953 and lived in Tallahassee where they welcomed two children Charles (Chuck) and Linda.
They traveled to Memphis, Tennessee in 1962, where Ed earned his dental degree from the University of Tennessee. In 1965, they settled in Stuart where Doc began his dental practice. After retiring from private practice in 1989, Ed once again worked for the state of Florida as the Senior Dentist at Martin Correctional Institution and as a Medical Examiner for the Florida State Board of Dentistry.
Ed was heavily involved in his church and community. The family attended First United Methodist Church of Stuart where he served on many of the church boards. He and Juanita served as counselors to the Methodist Youth Fellowship having a lasting impact on many local youth.
Doc was a lifetime member of the American Dental Society, Florida Dental Society, Atlantic Coast Dental Association and Tri-County Dental Association where he served as President. He served as chairman of the Martin County Health Facilities Authority. He also served as chairman of the Martin Memorial Hospital Board. Ed served on the Martin County Board of County Commissioners and was Chairman from 1973-1974. He served for many years on the Florida Inland Navigational District and the City of Stuart Local Planning Agency. He is a Past President of the Stuart Kiwanis Club.
Ed enjoyed freshwater fishing, boating in the local waterways and hunting in Texas. In retirement he and Juanita enjoyed traveling the country in their motorhome. Their longest adventure was a trip to Alaska. In his later years, Ed enjoyed the Wednesday morning Old-Timers Social at the Stuart Heritage Museum.
Ed passed to Heaven on April 27, 2021 at the age of 92. He will be missed by his family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Juanita. He is survived by his son, Chuck Geary, a local attorney, and his wife Becky, and by his daughter Linda Geary who is curator for the Historical Society of Martin County. He was proud of his two grandsons, Charles Geary, Jr and his wife Caitlin and Christopher Geary and his wife Jade. He also had many nieces and nephews that were dear to him.
