GRIMM—George. Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and pioneering bond trader —died February 9th, of cancer. Grimm took great pride in his ability to develop trusted relationships in business and life, living by the mantra "my word is my bond." Born in East Orange, New Jersey, he grew up in nearby South Orange and attended high school at St. Benedicts in Newark. As an undergraduate at the College of the Holy Cross, he paid his way through college by managing several businesses, and played on the freshman basketball team at a time when the Crusaders were among the nation’s elite. After college he landed a job with C.J. Devine and Co.—later acquired by the Merrill Lynch government securities operation—where his extraordinary memory and charisma propelled him to the top of his field. He met his wife, Eileen Grimm (Traynor), in Bay Head, NJ, and raised their four children in Chatham, New Jersey. After serving as President of the Bond Market Association in the late 1970s, Grimm and two of his fellow “Devine Boys” left in 1980 to buy out the small firm of William E. Pollock, which they transformed into one of the leading government bond dealers in the world before being acquired by the Australian bank Westpac in 1986. He retired from the firm in 1988 and moved to the Loblolly community in Hobe Sound, Florida. Grimm truly loved his life. He was a great competitor whom you could never count out because of his strong will and desire to win. A longtime Giants and Knicks fan, he enjoyed the arena atmosphere, the skill of the professionals, and the opportunity to socialize. Grimm learned to appreciate golf as a young caddy but never truly had the opportunity to hone his game until after college. He developed into a fine player, notching six hole-in-ones and winning a club championship title in Quechee, Vermont, where his family enjoyed summers and holidays. He was a member of Baltusrol, the Medalist, Loblolly, Father and Son Golf Association and the U.S. Seniors. In later life he was devoted to his nine grandchildren, teaching them the games he loved and showering them with affection. He had a wonderful wit and truly loved to engage people, rarely missing a Sunday at mass and filling the church with his singing. He loved his singing buddies — performing with the Loblolly Singers and Loblolly Carolers at nursing homes. He always remembered people by name, including the details of their lives. He is survived by his wife Eileen, their children Laura (Andrew) Forbes, Sharon (Jack) Gill, Christopher (Christine) Grimm, and Stephen (Rachael) Grimm, and nine grandchildren, Scott, Mark, Will, Geoffrey, David, Kevin, Abigail, Theodore, and Theresa. Celebration of Life St. Christopher Catholic Church, Hobe Sound, Florida 10:30am, Thursday, February 19th, 2015 In lieu of flowers, please perform an act of kindness for someone in need and think of George.
