Kathryn (Kay) was born on July 28, 1921, to Dr. And Mrs. John Gill Shimmon. She was raised in Willoughby, Ohio. Kay graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University followed by graduation from Yale's School of Nursing.
Kay married her childhood sweetheart, Rev. Ira Crowther in 1946. They had three children, Sarah (1948), David (1952) and Kristen (1959). The family was raised in Berea, Ohio and then Solon, Ohio. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents and her loving sister, Betty.
Kay and Ira settled in Stuart, Florida for retirement in the late 1970’s. She and Ira were founding members of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. She had a strong faith with consistent involvement in the Episcopal and Methodist churches during her lifetime, including St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, where Ira was Rector.
Kay’s ashes will be buried in the Ira M. Crowther Memorial Garden at St. Luke's Episcopal church next to Ira, who passed away in 1991.
Kay had many interests and shared her passion for learning and nature with her family. An avid bird watcher and kayaker into her 90’s, she experienced much of what the natural world has to offer. Always curious and eager to learn, she was a dedicated reader and listener, feeding herself with knowledge and perspective.
Kay’s family, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren loved her very much and are so thankful for her 99 years of life. Kay would have turned 100 on July 28. We will celebrate that day in her honor.
