

Muriel Mason, 175 SE St Lucie Boulevard, Stuart, died of a stroke on Tuesday, April 22, at Hospice House in Fort Pierce, Muriel moved to Florida in 1978, where she became an active member of the Stuart community, olunteering for many years as receptionist of the Elliott Museum, teaching French and Spanish in area schools, translating for the Stuart courthouse, and working as an active recruiter of sponsorships for the Atlantic Classical Orchestra.
She was celebrated by many members of the Stuart community for both her 80th and 90th birthday. She was loved by many for her singing "La vie en rose" and was sometimes mistaken for Edith Piaf. Muriel was born June 23, 1920 in Manhattan. Her father was a singer and a grocer and came from a long line of well known Jewish cantors and musicians. Her mother was a high end millinary worker. She grew up in Arverne and Far Rockaway, New York. She graduated from Far Rockaway High School in 1937. She worked her way through college at NYU night school where she majored in French and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She was one of the first Jewish students to be admitted to Syracuse University and went on to get her masters degree there in French literature. She met her husband to be, Col. Anthony Mason (died in 1984 in Stuart, Florida), in a French theater production at NYU. They were married on January 31, 1943. Right away, Muriel began her life as an army wife. Her travels in the USA took her to Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Utah, California, Nebraska, and Washington, D.C. Her travels abroad took her to Japan, Germany, France, and the former Soviet Union, where she assisted her husband in his job as military attache during the height of the cold war.She leaves behind a daughter, Susan, of Cornwall, Vermont, and a son, Roger, of Miami, Florida with his wife Andrea. Muriel had two grandchildren, Daniel and Jonathan, and five great grandchildren, Olivia, Oliver,Katherine, Gabriel, and Sebastien.Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 1:00-2:00 at Aycockk Funeral Home, 505 South Federal Highway, Stuart. A service will follow at 2:00 pm.
