Born in 1930, Norman graduated from Bates College in 1952, where he distinguished himself as a standout baseball player. That same year, he married his first wife, Elaine Johnson.
Norman served honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Miller, demonstrating the steadfast commitment that defined his life. Upon returning to civilian life, he joined the family business and, with Elaine, raised their four children in Marblehead, Massachusetts. A lifelong athlete, Norman excelled in golf at the Tedesco Country Club, achieving scratch-level play, winning numerous tournaments, and scoring multiple holes-in-one.
He also enjoyed tennis and badminton, maintaining an active lifestyle well into his later years. He married his second wife, Ruth Curtis in 1977, and continued to successfully run the family business. The couple retired to Stuart, Florida, where they embraced a vibrant social scene. An avid bridge player, Norman delighted in card games with his children and friends, always approaching life with kindness, integrity, and an unwavering sense of right and wrong. Norman was predeceased by his wives, Elaine Johnson Hammer and Ruth Curtis Hammer. He is survived by his children: Dianne E. McCarthy and her husband Michael, Susan E. Kushmerek and her husband Stanley, Russell N. Hammer and his wife Kelly, and Douglass A. Hammer and his wife Jodi; his stepchildren Cindy Curtis and Gordy Curtis; his seven grandchildren Ryan McCarthy, Katherine Ward, Jonathan Kushmerek, David Hammer, Daniel Hammer, Lillian Hammer, and Anneliese Hammer; and five great-grandchildren. Norman's legacy of love, resilience, and honor will endure in the hearts of all who knew him.
