She was born in Attoway (Smyth County), Virginia on February 27, 1932, a daughter of Brack and Hazel (Moxley) Haga. She spent her early childhood years in Southwest Virginia before moving with her family to Baltimore, Maryland, where her father worked in a defense plant during World War II. After the war, the family returned to Virginia, settling in Middletown. She graduated from Warren County High School and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science degree in Art from Madison College (JMU) in 1952. While attending college, she met her husband of 62 years, Judson Baldwin. After teaching in the public school system for eight years (elementary through high school), she remained at home to raise their two children. During that time, she also assisted her husband who pastored churches in the Culpeper, Luray, and Stuarts Draft areas. She taught various ages in Sunday School, participated in, and led mission organizations, and helped in many ways within those churches. In later years, she enjoyed gardening, reading, and assisting her pastor husband with nursing home ministries in the Stuarts Draft community. She enjoyed a lifetime of baking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and woodworking. Most recently, she was lovingly cared for first by Home Instead Senior Care of Augusta County, then by Edgeworth Park at New Town in Williamsburg. During her six years at Edgeworth Park, residents, family members and staff were often uplifted by her smile and gracious manner. Her peace and joy came from a relationship with her Savior whom she loved and served since giving her life to Him on August 22, 1941.
Through the years, Isabelle would say to friends and family, “I’m not leaving here until my room is ready,” based on Jesus’s words in John 14:2-3. “In My Father’s house are many rooms…I am going there to prepare a place for you. I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Judson; sister and brother-in-law, Iretta and Robert Colley; and a great nephew, Robert “Tank” Williams. Surviving is her son, Tom (Jan) and daughter, Jeanine (Tim); six grandchildren, Drew (Cora) Baldwin, Amber (Will) King, Lucas, Chila, Olga, and Justin Davis; six great grandchildren, Thomas, Violet, Arlo and Ralphie Baldwin and Sophie and Ford King; two nieces, Karen Colley and Jane Williams; and one great nephew, Paul (Jen) Williams.
