
He was born in Botetourt Co., on July 31, 1932, a son of the late Garland Oscar and Helen Catherine (Chittum) Ayers.
Roy proudly served his country in the United States Army and retired from the Dupont Company in Waynesboro. He attended Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church, was a member of Steeles Tavern VFW Post 8279 and was a lifetime member of the Waynesboro Elks Lodge. He was an avid antique car lover and loved going camping, woodworking became another hobby he enjoyed. He was a long time member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and Model A Ford Club of America.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Stephen Ayers, Allison Ayers; and great grandson, Taylor Layman.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Florence (Harris) Ayers; son, Stephen Ayers (Linda) of Waynesboro; daughters, Cynthia Huggins (Tom) of Idaho, Cathy, Sharon, and Diane Lilley (Lanie); grandchildren, Laura Lewis (James), MaryBeth Lemons (Phillip), Joanna Ayers, Debra Layman (Matt), Adam Patterson, Shawn Patterson (Ginger), Sabrina Welle (Robert), Jennifer Lowery (Mikey), Stephanie Lilley, Beth Lilley, Danny Sheets (Cindy) and Brandon Sheets (Jenni); great-grandchildren, Kayla Swart (Brandon), Jaimie Wilfong, Dylan Wilfong, Justin Wilfong, William Lewis, Sage Thompson, Willow Thompson, Nicholas Pittman, Faith VanderYacht, Rachel Layman, Brooke Layman, Tanner Layman, Alanna Patterson, Andrew Patterson and Benjamin Welle; Madie Varner, Dawson Pleasants, Tasia Wells, Cole Wells, McKenzie Waymack, Mason Waymack, Logan Beam, Gracie Sheets; great-great grandchildren, Buck Swart, Brantley Swart and Brody Swart; his two sisters, Barbara Worrell and Sandy Reese (Luther); and special friend and companion, Miss Kitty.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 with visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Stuarts Draft Chapel of Reynold Hamrick Funeral Homes, 1870 Stuarts Draft Highway, Stuarts Draft with Pastor Merle Fisher officiating.
A memorial service will be provided by the Waynesboro Elks Lodge #2270 and military rites will follow.
