Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Mary (Panetta), his beloved two daughters Donna Marie Scimone and her husband David of Hopkinton, Christina Michelle Hewitt and her husband Mark of Camarillo, CA., his adored granddaughters Ashley and Ally Scimone and his niece Juli Dee Juneau of New Orleans.
Born September 18, 1935 in Needham, MA, he was the son of Hollis O. and Gertrude Irene Thomas. He was brother and friend to predeceased Richard Kitson Thomas.
After graduating from Needham High School in 1953 he attended the Northwood School of Lake Placid New York in 1954. He then entered Dartmouth College from 1954 to 1958 where he excelled on the hockey team. He was awarded the R. E. Mulhern Trophy for being an outstanding player. He continued his hockey career for 21 years.
Soon after graduating from Dartmouth he joined the U. S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1964.
Don was a scrimshaw artist who mastered the craft. His work was well known and sought after throughout the country.
He was proud to be one of the original founders of the Clever Hand, a craftsmen’s cooperative.
Don was respected and loved by many and will be deeply missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sudbury Food Pantry.
Funeral services and burial at Needham Cemetery will be private.
