She was born Karoline Waldron in Gloucester, NJ, and known to her family and friends as “Cindy.” On May 30, 2011, after a long battle with cancer, Cindy found peace with her family at her side in her Sudbury home.
In 1951, Cindy graduated from Gloucester High. She worked at Sealtest Ice Cream and Woolworths department stores before embarking on a career in the performing arts and in beauty competitions. Among numerous awards, she was crowned Miss New Jersey State Fair and Miss National Air Show.
In 1954, Cindy was selected to appear on a children’s television show on WPTZ in Philadelphia. She was a big hit with the star of the show, Rex Trailer and their courtship eventually led them to “Boomtown” and beyond. On June 1, 1956, Rex and Cindy were married in the Boston Public Gardens and celebrated nearby at the Ritz Carlton. One year later Cindy gave birth to their only child, Jillian, and a new life in Massachusetts was underway.
While raising a child and attending charity events, Cindy dedicated her time to helping people and animals. She volunteered in the pediatric unit at Framingham Union Hospital, and as a case aid worker at Met State Hospital in Waltham. She was an active supporter of the Herald Tribune’s “Fresh Air Fund” and hosted many backyard events for the children and their host families during the summer months of the 1960’s and 1970’s.
Cindy made a lifetime commitment to animal rescue and adoption. She was a pioneering volunteer representative for “Friends of Animals”, helping to reduce the cost of spaying and neutering for cats and dogs. As well, she helped “Dog Orphans,” “Buddy Dog Humane Society” and for many years offered her home as a sanctuary to lost or abandon pets before finding homes or making her home their home.
Cindy enjoyed spending her summers with her family and friends in Rockport and Nantucket, and loved getting a bargain at Building 19. Her favorite musical artists were Janice Ian, Neil Diamond, and Jon Bon Jovi. Cindy was in harmony with nature and was an avid gardener. She enjoyed reading Victorian novels and studying about the Holocaust and Egypt.
Cindy will be missed by her family and by those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband Rex, daughter Jillian Trailer-Rollock, son-in-law Gerry Rollock, and niece Christine Waldron.
A memorial to celebrate her life will take place at 10am on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at the First Parish of Sudbury Unitarian Universalist. At her request, Cindy asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to “Friends of Animals/Spay & Neutering Program,” 777 Post Road, Suite 205 Darien, CT 06820, and “Framingham Animal Hospital/Surgical Assistance Fund,” 1415 Edgell Road, Framingham, MA 01701.
