My deepest sympathies to the entire Trachenberg clan. Vreny was such an incredible and inspiring woman who lived life on her own terms...something very few people manage to do. So full of adventure...leaving the safety and security of her family and her homeland, to follow her dreams (dreams, she told me, that were not viewed in positive light at the time in Switzerland) Her quick wit and zest for life were undeniable.  I will never forget the story of when she "discovered" that she was a vegetarian, while working with an English family as a young woman; and the vindication and empowerment she felt for having a  name for her eating habits, other than the more negative "she's a spoiled child," which she heard throughout her childhood in meat-loving Switzerland. An artist at heart, she laughed every time she would complete a painting, reminiscing on how her earliest teacher (who had a crush on her and would later name his first child after her) would do her art for her to ensure her continued high class standing. I will never forget her hilarious sense of humor and her no-nonsense approach to living the life you want. Rest in peace beautiful Vreny. I'm sure she's painting the heavens...dancing and singing up a storm.

My dear Vreny in Heaven, be blessed and surrounded now with the Angels. Remember: We shared a grea and intensive time together for nearly  40 years. First, I met you in Zurich, your former hometown and than, our friendship and love spreaded to New York.
You my dearest friend Vreny, will always stay in my hearth and when the time comes, we will share again in Heaven.  LOVE YOU VRENY , SO DEEPLY FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. Adieu Tschau Vrenely, as also your mom Karoline used to say 

I remember Vreni so very well as a warm, engaging, yet sophisticated woman. As her social worker at the Swiss Benevolent Society, I would visit her and ask about how she was doing, but always, she would, in turn, ask about me! Vreni came to several of our events and she and I had a shared love of the arts, especially music. I am amazed that even as she was becoming ill, she continued with her singing lessons and yoga classes! Such a wonderful woman who will be sorely missed by her Swiss compatriots at our Society. We send our sincere condolences to her husband, two children, and extended family.


Mrs. Trachtenberg was an exceptional woman.  A lover of the fine arts. She always put her best forward.  Even on the days when she felt she was just "hanging in there" she always managed to eloquently ready herself. She was kind and warm to those she trusted and cared for. Here is a picture of her celebrating her birthday with flowers sent to her by her beloved Buddy who she loved and adored so very much. He was everything to her.  She will be greatly missed.


Vreny used to come to the Worldly Lunches organized by the Swiss Benevolent Society. I remember her attending our Italian lunch as well as the Hungarian one. She would come in beautifully dressed, her hair and makeup perfectly set and her aide respectfully by her side. She would always include her helper in the gathering which was a soft but powerful statement of who Vreny was.  She was proud of having a helper.  Vreny was social, kind and interested in conversation and I remember her having a very good time with her Swiss friends.

Remembering  moments when I would visit Vreny and the wonderful women who cared for her. We would sit in the kitchen and usually start right off talking about Buddy. I knew this was a special relationship and so pleased when Vreny was able to join him a few years ago. Vreny always maintained her wit and wry sense of humor which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. She cared how she presented herself -elegant every day- even when she was not going out. Her favorite outing to the nearby Italian restaurant to have a glass of wine and enjoy the attention of the staff who knew her well was a highlight for Vreny. The photo below depicts the small joys Vreny had. She was truly one of a kind and will be missed.

My condolences to Karin, Buddy, and other members of the family. I am Buddy's first cousin: Mike's sister, Eernestine, was my mother. I have not seen Buddy or Vreny for many years, but I have fond memories of the times I spent with them -- at least one time at their apartment in lower Manhattan. Vreny was a wonderful person and it is sad to learn of her passing.
